Sub-Saharan Africa

Today, I will be traveling to Sub-Saharan Africa. Follow along as I visit two sites in Nairobi, Kenya. Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and is the home to nearly 4.4 million people.

Site 1 – The first site we visited was Uhuru Gardens Memorial Park located in Nairobi, Kenya. It is a commemorative park that resembles independence from the British Empire on December 12th, 1963. The word uhuru is Swahili and means freedom. During our visit, we saw two different monuments. The first being the Mugumo tree. The tree was planted on the Union Jack also known as the former Flag of the Colony of Kenya but was removed and replaced with the Flag of Kenya. The flag is also significant to the Kikuyu people. The next monument we visited was the independence monument. It was built in 1973 and is a twenty-four-meter-high column. It supports a pair of classes hangs and a dove of peace. This monument resembles the declaration of independence on December 12th, 1963. It also resembles the inauguration of Jomo Kenyatta – the first prescient of Kenya. On a side of the monument, we saw a statue of soldiers raising the Kenyan Flag. We also saw a fountain that celebrates the Uhuru.

Site 2 – Our next site was the Tom Mboya Monument that is on the side of Moi Avenue in Nairobi Kenya. The monument was placed in 2011 and honors Tom Mboya. Mboya was a minister who was dispatched in 1969. The statue stands 20 meters away from where Mboya was assassinated. The landmark is placed around the most recent architecture in the Nairobi CBD. Mboya’s statue stands around 10 meters tall from the starting of the base. Less than six months after it’s revealing, the statue’s area has stood out amongst the most famous points of tourism in Nairobi. Mboya stands out from some of the most well-known figures in Kenya’s battle for freedom. He took much control of patriotic resistance to the British guideline when other members like Jomo Kenyatta were detained. At the bottom of the statue, we saw flamingos that resemble his setting up for the Airlift Africa venture, which helped East African individuals study the United States.
