South Asia

Today, I will be visiting two sites in South Asia. These sites are located in Delhi, India. Delhi is the capital of India and is the home of nearly 20 million people.

Site 1 – Our first site was the Red Fort. The Red Fort (Lal Qila) is a monument that stands 33 meters (108 feet) above Old Delhi and was completed in 1638. Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor, designed it. The fort is located in the center of modern-day Delhi, India. It's built of marble and red stone. It was constructed on the Yamuna River's right bank. Because it was the royal family's residence, the Red Fort was formerly known as "Qila-i-Mubarak" (the blessed fort). The Red Fort's layout was designed to maintain and connect this site with the Salimgarh Fort. The Red Fort's planning and design symbolize the peak of Mughal innovation, which occurred during Emperor Shah Jahan's reign. Following Emperor Shah Jahan's construction, the fort has undergone numerous additions. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ustad Hamid and Ustad Ahmad began building in 1638 and finished in 1648, taking a total of ten years to complete.

Site 2 – Our second site was the Gandhi Smriti Museum. The Gandhi Smriti is where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life before being killed on January 30, 1948, is now a museum dedicated to him. Ghanshyamdas Birla built the 12-bedroom home in 1928. The Birlas hosted many visitors, including Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi. They sold the house to the government, and it was renamed Gandhi Smriti when it was opened to the public. A number of articles related to Gandhi's life and death are housed in the building's museum. While visiting the museum, we were able to see the preserved room in which Gandhi lived and the spot on the grounds where he was shot while on his nightly public walk. At the location where Martyr's Column presently stands, Gandhi was shot while praying. A pillar with a swastika symbol stands outside the residence. Photographs, sculptures, paintings, murals, inscriptions on rocks, and artifacts from Mahatma Gandhi's time on the site are shown in the Museum.
